Project Canceled

They did it...yesterday EC cracked the whip and canceled my project which advertised this blog and the discussion board.

Your recent Record Lookup project titled "Expert Connect Discussion Board and Blog!" has been deleted. You cannot post a project to invite other experts to a blog you've created.

Since they posted my previous message on their blog after a week, perhaps I should re-post with the discussion board link. It doesn't seem like they are up-in-arms with us communicating which is refreshing...but I won't hold my breath.

  1. Yeah, I saw that this morning-- been checking the project page to see the comments from other providers. Sheesh, you'd thin Ancestry would provide an area where the providers can interact/share-- it would really be beneficial for them (more $$$ to go their way).

  2. Maybe put the URL for the blog & discussion group in your signature-- that way other providers can see it.

  3. Interesting idea for the discussion group...but not the blog. I don't want to point potential clients to this.

  4. I hope you won't mind my honesty here, but I think there is a HUGE disconnect between the part-timers/hobbyists who participate in the ExpertConnect program, and those of us who are full-time professional genealogists.

While I am not adverse to sharing my opinions (whether or not they are liked) I find it confusing that folks who have full-time jobs outside the genealogy profession would find fault with the ExpertConnect program. To those of us who make our living -- and put food on the table -- as professional researchers, this opportunity is unmatched. You simply could not afford to purchase the amount of advertising that equals the exposure this program generates.

I respectfully ask: if genealogy is simply a hobby or extra income, why don't you just part ways with Ancestry rather than create this kind of drama?

  5. I guess you didn't see my Kudos post. I love Ancestry.com and always have. It is what got me started researching as a hobby. When others bash, I always stand up for it like it is my little sister :) It is bar none the best online genealogical research toolkit.

Let me give you a little background on my jobs. I have two fulltime jobs. One is at a University and the other is at EC. EC is a full time job.

The main difference between how the two organizations work is communication.

Here at the University, when I have a question about a process, I can ask someone. Hell if I care enough about it I can change it.

At EC, when I would like to have my voice heard, my flame is pinched out. When I offer a change, I'm ignored. If I request tools for the work I do, I'm given a friendly smile and patted on the head. Good job Josh but sorry.

Oh, I definitely work to put food on the table. I don't work at EC because I'm bored. I love the work and spend countless hours each day. With my jobs, I am very dedicated and serious about each. When there is a way to improve the processes of job function, I'll assist. If nothing happens, I'll do it.

Since when in communicating with other human beings drama?

Lastly, I never mind honesty! Bring it.

  6. I love Ancestry.com also... although I feel that they're hanging some of us out to dry in some ways. Like Josh said, they ignore good suggestions, and do their share of scolding, but on the other hand, their collection is amazing. I'm new to the professional ranks, although I've done genealogy as a hobby for myself and for others for 17 years. When I was trying to decide how I was going to support myself after a bitter divorce, I went through many ideas of what to do; thought about what I was passionate about, and I realized it was genealogy. It was really the first thing that I KNEW I was good at, so I decided to put all I have into it. While I'm getting my business off the ground, I'm earning money in other ways to put food on the table.
